Naval Officer

“Sir I just picked up on an underwater vessel 2 clicks away”. “Sh*t” I mumble to myself. Ok listen up you useless bunch of homesick idiots, I don’t want to hear another sound, we have a German sub right below us”. As soon as I shout this the cabin process to chaos. The boys have been through a lot and I know that but it’s not over yet. “SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!” I scream silence follows, “that’s better, John cut the engines, Steve turn off all power, I don’t want to see a single light on! Somebody round up everyone on deck and bring them inside. And make sure they don’t bloody move!” I suddenly have a massive sense of deja vu where I was in a similar situation a couple of years ago back in the Philippines. I shake my head in fear of the memory, no point focusing on the past right now. By now all the lights are off and the engine has stopped its familiar hum. I look into the faces of my crew and all I see is scared, tired boys. We got unlucky and a Japanese fleet surprised us, we were one of the only crews that had survived. But it hadn’t been a complete success, I lost almost half of my crew some of my best officers to the savage Japanese cannons. And now only 6 days later on our way back home we get the message that the Germans have released a new set of submerines. The entire day the crew and I were on edge waiting for the rhythmic whining of the torpedo alarms to go off. We finally made it to nightfall but I knew this would be one hella tough night. I wasn’t wrong, on a few hours later I hear the soul-crushing news. I go walk up behind the sargent that had seen the sub. I quietly watch the dot on the screen move ever closer to us. Fear churns in my stomach, surely they would’ve seen us by now I think to myself.

1.7 Static Image

Why I chose what I chose

The background: I used this background because it shows the family that are standing on the rocks looking out into a sunset on the ocean. This shows the feelings of loneliness and despair because there is nothing apart from the plane in sight. I also didn’t use a background because I thought that the image was dark and mysterious enough without a black background.

The plane: I put the image of a PanAm airplane crashing into the ocean because it shows that one day luck might just run out. The other reason is that Frank Abagnale Jr made a career from posing as a Panam pilot and getting free flights across North America. With Frank, he always wanted more, if that were to be money or a family, he was always greedy. With the plane, it symbolizes the effects greed has on a person and that if you push the limits, the limits can push back. And with Frank, there can be very high consequences

The family: I put a silhouette of a mother, father and a new born child standing on the rocks looking out the the ocean and the plane. The mother and father symbolizes Frank’s parents and the carefree happy life that he once had. Before greed took over him (sacrifices have to be made in the pursuit of greed)

The money: On the right side of my still image I put an image of cash being blown away from the plane crashing. The means that money is only good when you are alive and no matter how hard you work, 1 small accident could change it all and in 2 seconds it could everything could be gone. Also relating to this is a cross in the bottom left corner is a cross. The cross is fading into the shadows which shows that even if you are not in any danger at the current time, the threat is always there. This cross represents the ultimate danger and what greed can bring to a person.

Title: For the title, I used a very visible font with a black colour, this is because the colour black represents power, mystery, and death. As well as this I put in a slogan/quote about greed itself. This slogan is all in Red, the colour Red represents love, passion, and danger. I put this in my still image as a threat or a way to show people that greed is a terrible thing which only brings destruction and rage into a person’s life.

The type of still image I wanted to use was Pathos. This is because I want the viewers to have an emotional connection to what they are seeing, I want to try as best I can to scare the people reading.

The Essay

Intro

Tall and skinny with red hair, freckles, and light blue eyes you’d never think this character would be the cause of destruction within the surviving boys on the island. When we first meet him, Jack is an imperious, red-headed boy who begins making demands from the first moment he speaks. He is the head of a choir and seems to rule them quite severely. They are not allowed to even sit on the beach until he tells them they can (after they begged him to allow it), and we know they don’t like Jack’s leadership because they do not vote for him to be leader on the island.

P1

Jack is immediately disdainful cruel to Piggy for no reason than Piggy’s appearance and dismisses anything Piggy says even though Piggy has the conch. It is interesting that Jack is the only boy on the island carrying a knife at the time of the plane crash: though he brags about using it, the first time he has the opportunity he is unable to do it. This will soon change. As Jack’s obsession with hunting grows, so does his cruelty. Eventually, he discovers that if he can catch pigs if he paints his face; when he does, his transformation into “savage” in nearly complete. As Jack looks at his painted-face reflection, something changes. He looks in astonishment, no longer at himself but at an awesome stranger. He spilled the water and leaped to his feet, laughing excitedly. Beside the pool, his sinewy body held up a mask that drew the attention and horror of the others. He then began to dance and laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling. He capered towards Bill and the mask was a thing on its own, Behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness the face of red, white and black swung through the air and crawleds towards Bill. Bill started laughing: Then suddenly he fell silent and blundered away through the bushes. Whatever Bill, one of Jack’s choirboys, saw in Jack at that moment appalled him and caused him to run away. Jack now has complete freedom, because he feels no shame or guilt, to do whatever he wishes – and Bill clearly knows what that might mean.

P2

Jack becomes chief of a tribe of savages, and he moves from killing pigs to killing humans. He allows Piggy’s murder and he tries to stab Ralph with his spear. When Ralphs escapes. Jack orders his savages to hunt him down and kill him-which they would have done if the naval officer had not appeared on the beach.

Conclusion Jack’s tranformation is not from a wonderful, polite little boy into the chief of a tribe of savages; instead, his tranformation is more dramatic
